Find Your Style! (Cut-and-Paste Style Board for Kids)

Style isn’t what you wear, but how you wear it!

We love exploring cool patterns to wear and toys to dress. (Any kind of playtime that give kids lots of choices sounds like a good idea to us!) But there’s so much more to true style: A child’s personal style influences out how he or she expresses ideas, deals with challenges, and makes friends. This week we’re talking all about kids’ personal styles: what makes them tick, how they communicate, and how colors, patterns, and crafty activities can help them learn about themselves, build confidence, and have fun!

Here’s an activity idea to get your week off to a stylish start:

Cut-and-Paste Style Board

  1. Cut scraps of paper from a magazine to represent different colors, pictures, and ideas. (Some can be just blocks of color; others a single word, such as “travel” or “soft.”)
  2. Give the child a long piece of paper (check out this new tabletop paper roll—your style board can go on forever!) or extra-large construction paper, labeled “me” at one end, “definitely not me” at the other, and “sometimes me” in the middle.
  3. Ask the child to sift through the cutouts, pasting each piece to one area of the board. (Glue stick is tidier than glue and won’t cause thin magazine pages to wrinkle—we love this non-roll version for crafting!)
  4. When it’s done, look together at the items grouped at the “me” end of the paper for a visually rich conversation starter about personal style. (Remember to write the date on the back—this makes a terrific keepsake!)

And what’s more stylish than sharing? Snap a picture of your finished Style Board and send it to SocialMedia@MelissaAndDoug.com —we’d love to see what you come up with!

Stay tuned to blog.MelissaAndDoug.com all this week to learn more about kids and personal style.
